One of our big New Years blog resolutions for 2015 was to expand the travel section of this website. After an amazing trip to China and Hong Kong a few months ago, this year started with a wonderful trip to London (as you may have already seen here) and in this connection we teamed up with the luxurious One Aldwych hotel that is located right in the central of the British capital in Covent Garden and next to the Lyceum Theatre, where Disney’s Lion King musical is performed.
Arriving at this impressive, former newspaper publishing house is like entering an art gallery. The walls of the entry area and the lobby are lined with paintings and sculptures from different artists and you are welcomed most warmly by the staff of the hotel. From now on you won’t have to think about anything by your own. Your luggage will be carried for you and you will be escorted to the check-in desk.
But before entering the room or suite it’s time for a tea and pastries at the hotels secret Lounge at One. This lounge is to be entered exclusively by guests of the One Aldwych and was designed by no less than Paul Smith. Whilst enjoying your tea you can have a look through 60 by Paul Smith hand selected coffee table books from Rizzoli, the news on iPads and fashion magazines. Definitely one of our favorite spots here!
And then it’s finally time to explore the room! From a big king size bed, a huge HD flatscreen TV and the biggest wardrobe I’ve seen in a hotel until now the features of the rooms at One Aldwych are perfected right down to the last detail. If you can tear your eyes away from the beautiful view over the roofs of Central London, you will also spot a fresh plate with various fruits next to the bathtub and cut flowers on the table in your bedroom. Anything else needed? I don’t think so!
After a short settling-in period in room 610 you should definitely loose your clothes, slip into your bathrobe and take the elevator to the spa area of the hotel. Why? Because next to a steam bath and a sauna the swimming pool of the One Aldwych hotel has some really special features to offer. First of all this 18 meters long pool is chlorine-free and based on a mineral cleaning system that uses no harsh chemicals. Another great thing: As this pool has an underwater music system you can dive and swim while listening to relaxing songs and watching fish and corals on a big screening at the end of the pool. Of course you can also do a work-out in the fitness studio or enjoying a massage in the health centre but we didn’t try that during our stay.
Nothing beats a good room service dinner with a nice red wine while watching the sun going down behind the roofs of a beautiful city. After our extensive time at the pool we got kind of lazy so decided to have dinner in our room. The menu at One Aldwych has a looooot to offer so we tried to have a taste on everything. A classic Cesar salad and salmon with blinies for the first course, beef burger with fries and a steak for the main course and chocolate mouse with passion fruit and a cheese plate for dessert. Yum!
Leaving the hotel for a short after-dinner walk along the river Thames is a good idea. After we returned to the One Aldwych it was time to have a taste on the award winning cocktails at the Lobby Bar. Each month the hotels expert bartenders take another exceptional spirit and create a new collection of creative cocktails. This month’s drinks featured a Chez wormwood vodka and we loved it. Cheers!
My family and friends know that I am not a breakfast person. But if I have to eat something in the morning I love to have a freshly squeezed juice or/and a cup of tea with sweet croissants and maybe an egg. Of course One Aldwych has all of these things for breakfast in offer and so even I (as someone who’s not a breakfast fan) enjoyed this meal very much.
… and thank you for having us! We loved staying here and recommend this hotel to anyone who is into an independent and very personal 5* hotel with modern but super luxurious design, perfect service and an unbeatable location in Covent Garden!
